Handgun/Long Gun Retention and Disarming (HLGRD) System
By Bill Conroy and Daniel Schmer
Conroy, Bill
In 1975, eight Kansas City Missouri Police officers were disarmed. One officer was disarmed twice another officer was disarmed and killed with his own firearm. As a result of these disarmings,
James W. Lindell began his quest to develop a complete Handgun Retention and disarming system. He started out developing a system that would allow officers to secure their weapon in the holster with either
hand and move to a position of advantage and obtain a release of the attacker?s hand or hands from theholstered gun.
The Handgun Retention and Disarming System got its start in 1976 and has progressed to Handgun Retention with a drawn weapon and Handgun Disarming of an assailant.
In 1982, Mr. Lindell developed the Long Gun Retention and Disarming System at the request from law enforcement agencies including conservation officers who often patrol alone.
In 2004 as a result of requests from street officers the Ground Fighting and Weapon Retention System was developed by William Conroy and included as part of the complete system for weaponretention provided by the NLETC and Kansas City Missouri Police Department.
