Ward Smith is the Board Secretary of the National Law Enforcement Training Center.
Sergeant Ward Smith is currently assigned as the Supervisor of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department Firearms Training Section. Prior to joining KCPD in 1987, Sergeant Smith served as the Head Firearms Instructor for the Excelsior Springs Police Department, and assistant Firearms Instructor of the Independence Missouri Police Department. Upon joining the KCPD Sergeant Smith was fortunate enough to have learned Firearms Retention and Defensive Tactics directly from Mr. James Lindell.
Sergeant Smith has held assignments in Tactical Response (SWAT) both as an officer and supervisor, administrative assignments as Operations Sergeant for the Special Operations Division, and as the Supervisor for the Basic Training Unit (Recruit Training), prior to his assignment in the Firearms Training Section in 2006.
In the past seven years, the KCPD Firearms Training Section has conducted several important projects in the furtherance of officer safety, the most recent being the Internationally Recognized KCPD Badge Placement Study (2011-2012).
Sergeant Smith looks forward to working with the rest of the NLETC Board in improving the safety of our Law Enforcement Professionals.
